DVD movie audio problems

Hey Guys

I have a SB Live! 5.1 sound card and a TDK 12x DVD burner and I have connected them with the digital sound cord, I also have Creatives 5.1 analog speakers. I go to play a commercial dvd movie in window media player I have to go into the sound controls and select s/pdif output to get any sound.......... I cannot select the 6 channel output for the 5.1 speakers and windows media player won't set them as a default. Is this a software problem or a hardware problem. Thanks for you time.
