Video problem... i think
Ok... slight problem with this project i'm working on. I put together this system (specs below) and now I'm trying to figure out if i did soething wrong. I got everything hooked right (i'll double-check when i get off of work) and when i power it up, the screen, instead of displying anything, goes to standby mode (you know, oragne light on the moniter). everyone i talk to says to install the video drivers through DOS but how can i do that if i can't see anything? Shouldn't there be some kind of video even if the video driver isn't installed.
Also, how can I install the OS if I can't see anything? -Me ecs pt800ce-a mobo intel P4 2.8GHz w/HT 512mb pc3200 ddr 160 gb hdd ATI Radeon 9200 128MB WinXP Pro (not installed) |

Well... I followed what was posted, and it still doesn't work. The processor doesn't heat up at all. First, I thought it was the cpu, but I tried I different one from a comp that was lying around, and that one didn't heat up either. I'm starting to think that it's the mobo. Can someone give me a second opinion?

If you went through the steps in the troubleshooter and it still doesn't show any signs of life, it's time to start swapping known good parts in.

But, if the RAM and the video card ARE bad, wouldn't the cpu still get a little warm?

From your description the cpu is getting no power at all.
In that case neither is anything else. If you've gone through all the steps in the troublshooting thread it's time to think about replacing parts and at the head of the list is the motherboard and/or the power supply. Until you check those out there is no point in worrying about the ram or your video card. If those were at fault you would get bios beeps in a distinct pattern that would identify the problem part. |

the board was getting power, I know this becuase I connected the cpu fan and it kicked on. I just said f**k it and got a new board (ABit AI7). This one worked, and I was able to push my 2.8GHz P4 to 3GHz without even trying too hard (maybe not much for you OC gurus, but it was my first overclock). Thanks for the help, everyone!
