try loading the drivers from nvidia not the ones that come in the packaging. uninstall those drivers and go to nvidia.com and download drivers under support

i think it would be in your control panel add/remove progs list. look for video drivers whatever they are named.

Hmm...is it different for nVidia drivers? I just installed my ATI Catalyst 4.9 drivers OVER my Catalyst 4.7 and it worked fine.

Just as a clarification, those temps (60C ish) are Graphics Card Temps, right? If they are, it's probably just insufficient air flow - or the chip fan isn't working effectively.

i dunno my geforce 6800GT runs at 60ish temps too. i've heard that you could OC without damaging it so that it runs towards the near 80s-90s. i think he installed the hardware drivers which may have been non official nvidia drivers.

You do not have to remove the drivers manually before installing new ones. I have never done it and it has always worked fine. HERE are the drivers you need. Just download and install them. There is no need to do anything else.

mabye that was going from ATI to nVidia but i was just offering an option he could try cuz downloading latest drivers had no effect. i would also try to mabye downclock your VPU back to stock 6800GT settings with coolbits and then see if it works ok and then ramp up from there.

There definately is an effect in overclocking the GeForce 6800GT to 6800U ish speeds...compare the size of the HSFs on each card. The GeForce 6800GT somehow compacts it all into one slot, the AGP/PCI-E slot, while the 6800U takes up the slot directly next to the slot it fits in. Imagine what huge cooling system they utilize.

The Gainward Golden Sample cards are technically overclocked but they use high quality components and a rigerously tested to make sure they run stable. Rustywood's situation seems strangely similar to the one I was in a while back. I bought a Gainward GeForce 4ti 4800se. Within a week all 3D graphics looked like THIS. I RMA'd the card and the second one lasted three months before dying without warning. I attributed it to the cheap PowMax PSU I was using and replaced it with an Enlight 360w before RMA'ing the card. I have had the third replacement running flawlessly for over a year now. Since your PSU is a good one I doubt that's the culprit. Maybe it's just bad luck.

man,its different than that, more like shapes and objects losing color "blinking", lines running across the screen and then disapear, also im running a thermaltake 480 twv which means its got an led that tells you how many watts you are using, which at even at full load is only 170w when i looked at my watts requirements for this system when i was building it , it said at least 300 w ,heck the card requires a min of 300w could it be its not getting enough power?

hmm mabye try a different molex connector on the card then? i doubt it's that but you could try reseating the card and also trying a different molex if you think the PSU is the cause.

I doubt it's a power issue. If I recall correctly, "blinking squares" are the result of VRAM problems.

VRAM = Video Memory. In other words, it's the memory on the card itself. Molex connectors are the power connectors used for things like hard drives, video cards, and optical drives. The video card should be on it's own connector with nothing else connected to it.

when i say blinking squares i mean like a rock or a box or another object will lose their intended color go yellow or green then back to their intended color, but not the same object and intermitent.it is on its own power dongle not split with anything else

How about you take a screenshot of it. That might help. just get into a game or whatever application that it occurs and press "print screen" on the keyboard. Then open a photo program or even MS Paint, paste, and save it.
