sb live 5.1 card not working

have had this problem forever and not sure what is causing it. the problem is that when i play music the base is really scratchy. i have unistalled my drivers and reinstalled them. any ideas? could the audio card be bad? if it was bad though the audio wouldn't work at all. the audio seems to play fine if the song doesnt have base to it. ive adjusted the settings for the audio but nothing works. any ideas whats going on? i also disabled my onboard audio. don't get it.

Hi

Do you have the updated drivers for Windws xp? What player are you using for your music? Winamp gives me poping sounds and distortions. Try JetAudio. You can get it from download.com. I'm happy with it. I have been having alot problems with my sound card lately and I've been trying everything in the world, so If that doesn't work, maybe I can offer more suggestions.

what do you mean by winxp updated drivers? I just installed the drivers that were on the sb live drivers cd that came with the audio card. Im using windows media player. really weird problem. you think though that if the card was dead the sound wouldn't work at all. are there any settings im missing that would be causing this? i changed the base in the volume control but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. really frusturating.

As BatGirl said, the best thing you try without doing anything drastic is updating the device drivers... in this case your sound cards device driver couldn't hurt to be updated, if that is what fixes it...easy fixed.
Hardware developers are always trying to make things better and they release updated versions of their drivers, which are usually free to download from their website.
Identify the sound card's manufacturer and see if you cant locate their website, then try to find their "download driver" or similar webpage and download and install it to suit XP.
Let us know how you go, you could have a speaker that is on it's last legs or the card may be failing... lets try the less expensive stuff first
If it comes to the card, they are that cheap these days, you can get a very decent card for a very reasonable price.
What type/brand of card is it by the way?

Edit: Just saw your sig! ignore the last question! definately try downloading the latest driver for XP first.

I've had the same problem with my Audigy2. It's just a sad fact that Creative's drivers are HORRIBLE, but their hardware is fantastic.

Try the KX Project drivers. I have on my HTPC, and I'm loving the audio quality. http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/index.php?skip=1

Maybe I missed it and am blind, but what speakers are you using too? I tried looking in your sig.

Is your base speaker lying against something? Does your speaker system even have a dedicated bass speaker?

try winamp and see if you have the same problem, you may need the alternate drivers or have a buggy woofer.
