I had the impression, when ATi released their X700 series, that the X700XT was supposed to rival the 6600GT and be priced at around the same level, which would be great for ATi as this is a v. good card. However, they've kicked themselves in the face (god knows how they managed) by releasing the X700pro, which got soundly thrashed in ALL tests by the 6600GT, at THE SAME PRICE AS THE GT. This is ripping people off, honestly. They said themselves that the XT would be aiming at the $200 mark and the pro would be much cheaper. Take a look at Newegg:
X700pro: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...roperty&DEPA=1 6600 (performs on par with the X700pro) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...roperty&DEPA=1 6600GT: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...roperty&DEPA=1 Just for laughs, I'll mention that the X600XT is still priced at the $200 mark... I think that ATi'd better get their act together, because they're ripping off customers here Comments welcome fedzedit: links not working, just go to this page and select the chipset in the drop-down menu: http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact.a...alog=48&DEPA=1

I don't think I would go so far to actually say ATI is trying to scam customers, it just seems that NVidia is offering better bang/buck this round of high end cards. The same thing could be said over the last round where the 5950's didn't compare to the 9800XT for the same bang/buck.
Your right ATI does need to do something but they will probably do that is the next round of high end cards, the competition is so close that it is expected that NVidia and ATI will leapfrog each other from time to time. But allas a $600 graphics card is still $600, I will just stick to my budget and keep my ATI 7500. |

Actually no - the Radeon X700 XT is supposed to be priced at 200 USD. Looking around at graphics cards and prices for quite some time, I can say for sure that they do tend to fluctuate. In this case, the initial release of the card (just like GF6600GT was), the Radeon X700 PRO is priced slightly high. The X700 XT isn't even out yet...no comparison there.
Another thing bothers me of your first post...the factual innacuracy depicted. You mentioned that the Radeon X600 XT VPU is at the 200 USD mark...it's 154 USD. Though I do respect your opinion on that the nVidia cards, in your opinion, are far better, please do justice to the facts - both cards, whether nVidia or ATI, deserve to be seen in the same light ("HUGE SCAM" is a bit of an overstatement?). Thanks, kram

The X600 was one of ATI's great goofs. I think it's being switched to OEM builders to sell to people who don't know any better.
The X 700 line up is like this : X700 pro 128mb This will be the slowest of the cards think of it as the equivalent of the 9600 for it's generation. It's going for $150. X700pro 256mb This is the card the ATI is aiming at the video editing segment and it's the one you found. Nice card if you're into video editing and it $200. X700XT 128mb This is the card that will be matched against the 6600GT and if you see one let me know. It's also $200. If video card companies keep messing around they have only themselves to blame when their customers start thinking they're being scammed.

Hold on, I looked on Newegg and the X600XT's are near to and above the $200 price mark. I mean the Asus PCI-E model is $235, how ridiculous is that? I call that a scam, just as Nvidia's old series were. I looked up a bit more closely, and the X700pro 256mb was supposed to be priced around $200, with the 128mb X700XT. This seems about right, but the 6600GT still canes it in all benchmarks. (They don't play games, I know, but they indicate well). I'd be interested in seeing where the 9800pro will go, once the X700XT is released. Hopefully around $150...
6600GT was mainly released at the right price mark, as was the vanilla card. It's up to ATi to do something special with the X700XT, as Anandtech says it was the lesser card in its tests: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2214&p=10 (Check out the source test, verrry interesting!) I was fervently pro ATi in the last round, and built a lot with the 9800pro. However, this round is still undecided, especially with the 6200 out. Only time will tell, but I think Nvidia have the edge (as you've noticed lol). fedz

Kinda hard to tell...your first post and title seemed to be adamantly nVidia. I posted a link above...it's the price of a Sapphire Radeon X600 XT. I think you are greatly mistaken on the price...there IS competition in this still

Yep, but I do think it is a scam. When I talk about the X600XT, I mean the most expensive one
. Look at Newegg, in fact, here it is:http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...121-516&depa=1 Look at the benchie above, it's quite interesting to see how the 6600GT fares against the 6800 and X700XT. It seems to be the reverse of all expectations, it gets stronger as the eye candy is turned on. I seem to remember that Nvidia were particlularly bad at that... fedz

No argument that the 6600GT looks the better card for this generation but that doesn't mean ATI is pulling a scam.
As for the X600 XT, ridiculous prices get dropped. There's a 128mb, 256mb of bandwith 6800 for sale at outpost.com for $249 the BFG 6800 OC. I won't be buying a card till sometime next year but that's the one I'm serious about. |

Yep...agree with you there Tin. What I meant was that it is unjust to compare the X700 Pro and the GeForce 6600 GT when in fact, the X700 XT has not been introduced into Newegg yet. A sizable majority of my parts are bought through rebates at retail stores...I just recently found the ATI TV Wonder Pro for 50 USD at 50% off...time for another purchase

i think it's unfair to ATI to call it a scam. are the prices as low as nVidias? no. is ATI lying about prices? no as we have seen that they are being retailed for 200. are the prices undesireable? well we all would like to get 6800ultra's or X800Xt PE for 200 but we can't can we?

6800GT in England can be found for over £100 ($150) cheaper than a X800pro
The cheapest 6800GT is £242 retail on Aria (the Asus 9999GT), and on that site the cheapest X800pro is £287 (The ATi card). The average price difference is much higher though ![]() fedz

Not only may others be interested, but this thread is about prices so it wouldn't be crapping it up anyway.
