compaq deskpro/cmedia audio problem

hi there,
i have installed some new components on an old compaq deskpro 2000 m5100/1200 computer, namely a cd burner, and a (cmedia) sound card.

the machine originally had windows nt on it, but i swiped the drive and loaded windows 98 on it. windows loads ok, and the burner is recognised as such, but the sound card does not show up in the device manager.

i ran the setup cd that came with the card several times, but nothing. there is no speaker icon in the system tray, and when i try to run the mixer program that comes with the sound card installation, it just does not load. i was wondering if when i swiped the drive i may have erased any system files necessary for certain parts of the system board to work, i don't know.

i've read through all the threads in this section to see if anyone had a similar problem, but i haven't seen anything. any suggestions?

Does the sound card show up in Device Manager? If not, is there any trouble signs indicated there?

Try switching the sound card to a different PCI slot. Does your install cd say that the card is supported by 98?

re: win98 compatible? etc..

i already tried switching to another pci slot.
yes the box says it is win98 compatible.

the pci slots are on a riser card (daughter board), i was wondering if there needs to be any additional drivers for it to work. the sound card does not show up at all in device manager.

?? don't know what else to try....
anymore suggestions?

Is there anything else on the daughter card? Try plugging something into it if there isn't. Then you can rule out that there is no problem with the daughter card.

well, there was a NIC and i took it out. then i tried the sound card in that slot, but it was not detected. then i put back the NIC and it was detected, but not installed properly. i tried a PCI video card and it was not detected. i tried another sound card and it was not detected.

i'm wondering if i would have to get a sound or video or any other pci card from compaq. that would be weird. now i could just do away with this system, forget about it, move on, but i'm just really curious as to what the problem actually is, know what i mean?

Try a compaq driver update from HP.com

Or perhaps the daugther card has a loose connection or metal strip could have wore off a fraction.
