video card problems

I recently replaced my video card(gainward 5700 ultra)while it was in my machine I was water cooling so I did not use the factory fan.when I went to install it in my daughters machine I could not find the origional fan/heatsink so I bought an arctic cooling NV silencer 2 fan/heatsink unit, when I installed the card into the machine and turned it on all I get is colored paterns(small squares or rectangles) which change color and shape every few seconds.any suggestions as to what could be causing this? BTW I have built all my computers so I am not new to changing components, and No I have not tried to reinstall it into my machine to see if it works OK as it would be a major pain to reinstall the water block. Thanks Dave
