Problem running games with programs in taskbar
Whenever I try to run Knights of the Old Republic with programs in the taskbar, it resets back to the desktop as soon as I start it. Occasionaly, it goes into a loop of going in between the game and the desktop, and VPU Recover is enabled. I have a ATi Radeon 9200SE(I know it is a bad card, but if its a hardware issue, it gives an excuse to replace
). Anyway, is there a fix for this mildly annoying problem?

Are you getting a VPU recovery error when it crashes to the desktop? If so, disable it. I've had problems with VPU recovery, I usually keep it off.

If I may make the logical assumption that if U do not have the backround programs running in the taskbar, and your game runs fine than it is because there are not enough resources available on your machine to run all those things at the same time. I could be not enough ram or it could be the virtual memory/swap file settings, or as mentioned above it is a conflict with one of those things U have running in the backround..

Do you need those other programs running? It's not recommended to have anything in the background when you're playing games. Also, have you patched KOTOR?

Thanks for the quick replies. They helped me find the culprit: Folding at home was eating up my system resources. It works great now, thanks for all your help.

folging @ home doesn't eat up sys resources, it stops using the cpu when you start doing something like gaming. however, it is open gl, and it has been known to cause problems with other open gl programs. i believe that kotor is open gl based.
