definately the 6800 if you were to spend more money on it. another option right now might be the 6600GT but i'm not sure if it performs better or worse then the vanilla 6800

I believe 6800 gt runs on less pipelines however feel free to corect me if im wrong im not 100% sure, if that is the case however you would not be able to over clock it to match the original 6800 xt version, so the GT would be theslower of the 2 no matter what

Unhappy

well the 6800 gt is the 256 mb which has like 16 pixels per clock or something like that. The regular 6800 is 128mb with 12 pix. per clock, and the 9800 pro is 128 mb with 12 pix per clock as well. I like the 128 mb better cause its sooo much cheaper and it is my understanding that 256 mb isnt really utilized too much.
I just returned a radeon 9550 (256 mb)...piece of #@$%^%$ garbage!!. I couldn't even play some parts of halo without jumping all over the screen. I've come to the realization that the video card industry has us by the gonadalates.

the 6800GT and Ultra have 16 Pipelines. the 9800Pro has 8 and so does the 6600GT. the 6800Vanilla has 12 pipelines. so far, the only ATI card that has 16 pipelines is the X800XT i think. i think the 6600GT is clocked higher then the 6800Vanilla and is around 70 dollars cheaper. i don't think there is a big boost in performance between the 6600GT and the normal 6800.

Rendering Pixel Pipelines that is...otherwise, it would be a different story all together. But I agree with your analysis - the GeForce 6800 would be the better choice - it's the "bridge" between new generation and old generation cards.

I'd go for the 6600GT, it's a very good card for the price and matches the 6800 in several tests.
Your choice
