Can't disable onboard video to install new card

I want to upgrade the video on my machine. I have looked in BIOS for a disable feature for the onboard video and it is not there - nowhere. Motherboard is MSI K7N2G-L (MS-6570). The card I have to install is an ATI Radeon 7500, PCI version.

I do not want to risk screwing up the whole video setup since this card isn't exactly current or top of the line. Just laying around unused and is slightly stronger than the onboard. But I may do something more serious in the near future and might as well find out now how to get it to work. (Except I would go with AGP.)

On other upgrades, I have removed the old drivers, shutdown, installed the new hardware, let the machine find it and ask for the new drivers, and then install. On this one, I am a little reluctant to remove the old drivers because I don't know how it will respond with the onboard enabled and no drivers.

It does find new hardware when booting up with the card in but, again, I am not sure how it will respond if I point it to new drivers with the old ones still there and onboard enabled.

Would this MB somehow default to the video card regardless of the drivers, etc.?

Ideas?

Hey,

You should put in the new card and install the drivers for it. Then reboot the computer in safe mode, go into your device manager -- video display. Click the onboard video and click disable at the top. Reboot the pc normally and it should go to the new video card. Good luck.

Hadn't thought about device manager. Sounds like that could be the trick. Will be a while before I can try it. So, I may not post back for a few.

Thanks for the help.

(Still wondering why a motherboard wouldn't have the ability to disable....)

No problem, glad to have been of service. I've had to do this on a couple of my own machines.
