Laptop To Big Screen TV

Is there such a thing as a cable that you can plug into your laptop ---
then plug into a Big Screen TV in order to project a .ppt or .pps presentation?

If the software is an issue....is there something out there that I can use to throw together a quick "show" compiled of scanned pictures and music - to project for a "50th BD Party Event" --- at one of the local restaurants for a large group of people ( over one of the restaurant's big screen tvs )

Don't have one of the typical "projectors" that you'd plug into the laptop. However, I know those work well and are easy to put on a show...
Looking for a quick and inexpensive alternative for this monemental event....

Thanks in advance to all the video experts that might be able to assist!

As far as software for a slideshow of pictures and music, powerpoint should work fine, it's pretty simple to add music files into the background. The harder part is telling the music to keep playing after you move to the next slide, I forget how to do this myself...sorry. But if it's just pictures you're after, if you put all of the pictures you want in one file in the order you want them to be presented, Windows XP has an option to view them as a slide show in the column on the left of the window showing the file with the pictures in it.
