I am trying to copy a old home movie vhs tape to a dvd using a dvd/vcr combo player/recorder. The player gives the message that the tape is copy protected. It is not copy protected. It was an unremarkable blank vhs tape when it was purchased and recoreded on 22 years ago. Why is this happening and is there a fix to this problem?
Thank you for your help, Tim |

Welcome to PCMech. You're referring to a set top combo player for your TV? I don't know if those even allow tape-disc-recording of any kind...
Is the write-protect tab on the VHS tape still intact, or has it been removed? It's on the lower left corner of the spine of the tape. Dunno if that's maybe what's causing the player to mistake it or not, but try putting a piece of Scotch tape over it to see if that allows the player to read from it and record to DVD.

vhs to dvd copy
Hi,
Thank you for the reply. The unit I am referring to is a dvd/vcr recorder/player stand alone deck that is not attached to a tv. I have tried two brands, thinking the first brand was defective. The first brand was GO video and the second was Toshiba D-VKR3SU. The write protect tab has been removed, however, I did put tape over it and that did not solve the problem. In addition, I did have success with another vhs tape that had the write tab removed without scotch tape. Thanks again, Tim |
