software ocing a vid card?

the only way ive found to oc my vid card, or change the speeds at all is through software. all i did was get the reg edit for the nvidia control panel and the speeds are in there. i posted in another thread about this but noone has replyed so im thinkin its in the wrong place! my card is a chaintec 6600gt agp. the clock was set at 500 and ram at 900 but i wanted the ram to go to 1000 and with this progam it finds the most stable speed but it wanted to oc the core speed to 570 and i dont have a stress test or temps on the card so i dont want to ruin it so i just set it at 500 and the ram at 1000 with this software. is there any other way or is this a good way to change clock speeds? also in my bios, for the graphics card there is an option to change the frame rate buffer size, or something like that, and i put it all the way up to 128mb, is that where its supposed to be? i couldnt find any info on that.

oh and if there are anyother good ocing programs, if software oc is good, what are they? and a nice stress test would be great if anyone knows of one.

Checkout Powerstrip for overclocking. It is shareware but once you get the speeds as high as you can you don't need the program anyway.

When overclocking the card, go slowly, 5-10mhz at a time. For a stress test, run a version of 3dMark. Check for any artifacts or obvious crashing. If its clean, bump it up again and check. Repeat until you find the maximum speed that maintains stability.

I think on your graphics card, only software overclocking is possible, usually that buffer setting in the bios goes up to 256mb which is apparantly best for o'clocking. Rivatuner is a very popular program which i have found to get good results for o'clocking. Alaron56 is right go in small steps and also i find that even when i dont get any artifacts or any problems in 3dmark i may still get some in games so if it happens just back off a bit

It took me MONTHS of experimentation to finally find my GPU's overclocking sweet spot. But I'm finally confident that I found my card's maximum. I'm using Powerstrip which I highly recommend. Get as many benchmarking programs as you can (Aquamark3, 3DMark, etc.) and run them all every time you up the speeds. It'll take a lot of time but it's fun. I'm running my X800XT PE @ 560/580.

are there anyother stress tests that are less than 50mb dl?? i only have dial up so its hard for me to keep a connection long enough to dl aquamark3 and especialy 3dmark.

just play your favorite game for a little while and see if you get any artifacts.
