Two sound cards? one for input.

ive got my onboard sound all tied up with my surround sound speakers....but i want to have a way to have an input for them (my onboard came with the red green and blue connectors BUT if you set it to 5.1 surround sound u use them all just for the speakers unless you want some speakers not to work.) i was wondering if i could throw an old PCI sound card in there and somehow use that as the input....would this not work since they would be two seperate sound cards?

EDIt: sorry already posted this but accidentaly clicked "back" and came back to my computer and posted again--mods can close this since i already have the same thread posted.
