Better Monitor

I have finished building my computer and now want to get a better monitor.

I was looking at getting a LCD monitor but a friend of mine said that he read in a computer mag. That the old CRT monitors have a better display. Something about the LCD's using a different pixel format or something like that. He could not remember it very well and now he can't find the mag. Anyway what is better the new flat screen monitors or the CRT monitors?

For extreme 3d gaming, I believe the older CRT monitors have to edge in performance, but I'm not a gamer and I love my LCD screen. I had it for years now and will never go back to CRT. I would guess that for heavy CAD or other graphics intensive work CRT is better..
BTW, check out the latest prices on LCD's, I may get a new one and give my kids this one..

LCD Monitors are getting better by the day - the word "gaming LCD Monitor" is no longer an oxymoron. If you can afford it, I'd say find a good quality LCD Monitor - that will show little difference between some of today's CRT Monitor and the flat panels. I own a Samsung 17" LCD Monitor and it's fantastic - no ghosting at all on gaming, superb image quality, all I can ask for in a CRT Monitor and more.

Comparing a CRT to a good TFT, the only thing where the CRT is better, is that it can display different resolutions at full screen with about the same quality.
A TFT can only display the native resolution sharp, the others have to be interpolated, which results in a blurry picture.

Overall, I can live with this little weakness. After all, the picture quality at native res. is so good, I and all my friends have TFTs and we will never go back to CRT.

I've been playing Far Cry on my LCD monitor and don't notice any ghosting at all, so I would say most newer LCD monitors are just as good as CRT monitors.
