I recently built a computer for myself and I have encountered a strange happening when I play video files. I notice that I see some vertical red lines across the mpeg or avi file when it plays. They will sort of change patterns depending on what action is on the video. (If you have seen shorts in an LCD screen that are vertical, this is similar to what it looks like, except I have a 17" CRT monitor.) I have noticed that this does NOT happen on DivX type AVI and MPEG files, nor does it happen on WMV files. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my video drivers, DirectX 9, WMP 10, and used an older set of video drivers. I have no idea why this is happening. It is a very strange occurrence. Here is my computer setup.
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 3000+ S939 1 gig of Mushkin Pc3200 DDR Ram (Timings 2.5-5-5-5) 200 GB Maxtor SATA HD Video card ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64 MB AGP. I have also disabled the Nvidia/ATI VideoCard Overdrive feature in the Bios. Thank you for your help. |

What type of video files DOES this happen on?
Have you got the correct codec installed to play those types of files? Open one of the problem files in GSpot and post a screenshot. |

This happens on files that are not WMV or DivX. So non-DivX Mpeg and Avi are the files it messes up on. It's very strange indeed. When I get off of work I will post a picture of this problem.

Codecs. You simply don't have the right codecs.

I will look on the internet for some codecs then. Is www.free-codecs.com a good resource for these? It seems alright though. I'll post when I get these downloaded and installed. Does one have to uninstall the codecs completely before reinstalling them as one would a Video Card driver? Thank you.

Don't go wild installing all sorts of silly codecs you don't need.
Open each file in Gspot (google it, free) and find out what codecs you NEED. Install what you need only. No, they're not like video card drivers. Just make sure you only have ONE version of each codec you need. Two versions of Xvid can royally mess up your video playbacks. Get the codec's here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tools...+or+List+tools |

Well, most of the problem is fixed. The funny lines are still there, but they aren't as frequent now. The problem seems to be located with Mpeg1 compressed files. I am not sure why they are too different, but those are the ones that do it. I used Gspot to find this out. When I selected a video file, there wasn't a specific codec listed, it just told me that it was an MPeg 1 file.

Well, I was inspired and I did something different. I completely disabled the Hardware Acceleration in my display properties. Those funny lines are now completely gone. But this serves a problem to me. Does this mean my Mobo may not handle my card too well, or vice versa? Strange indeed.
Edit: It seems as though my DirectX could be messed up. Those lines started to appear when I set it to do the "Disable all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations." If it moved it down one notch, those lines went away, but DirectX acceleration was completely disabled....... Last edited by ZeroX5; 02-01-2005 at 09:52 PM. |

Alright, the video problem is completely fixed. I downloaded the Klite Codec pack and installed it. I had to use Media Player Classic and the DX9 codecs(I also had to tweak the codecs just right to get them to work.), but they work fine now. Unfortunately, the problem as a whole is not fixed. I found out that when I played SNES and Sega emulators, the same exact thing happened the videos were experiencing. But I did notice that this does not happen when I play them in a "Windowed mode." Only in fullscreen mode did this happen. This is so strange. I hope I can figure it out sometime, but I have a feeling it could be a combination of my mobo not getting along with my GPU very well.
