How do I uninstall old video drivers to install new video card?
I am upgrading from an ATI Radeon 9800 pro card to a ATI Radeon x800 platinum card made by Sapphire.
I cannot find the original installation manual for the 9800 so I went to ATI.com and was not able to locate instructions for driver uninstallation there either. I did a Google search and came up with http://www.tweakxp.com/tweak1222.aspx ...which requires that I go into my registry and delete things...Yikes! Is this right? It just seems it should be simpler to delete the old drivers. Thanks, David

If you are staying with the same brand of card (in this case ATI) then you don't need to uninstall the drivers as far as I know.

I seen problems a few times installing over ATI drivers.
Link here to a thread where you can download ATI's uninstaller and the lateset drivers. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=123868 |

Boot to safe mode, Right-click My computer and go to properties. go to hardware-> device manager -> double click on display. Right click the entry below and click remove. Restart the computer and install your video driver that came with the Card.

I would imagine the x800 drivers are different from the 9800 drivers..am I correct? Which would mean the x800 drivers are not installed since the computer is a year old and the x800 card did not exist a year ago, nor did the x800 drivers. What happens if I unstall the 9800 drivers and reboot the computer?..does the screen go blank? ... leaving me with the inability to install the new drivers?
Thanks, David |

No. computer will boot up fine but in standard VGA mode (like in safe mode). Windows will notify you that it has errors in video settings. just close the window and install your driver. Reboot.
If you're lucky windows will have a driver for your new card and will automatically detect it but I recommend installing your drivers from the cd.
