Sound fades during dvd viewing
Hello all, I have recently noticed that while playing a dvd on the pc the sound fades. The sound card in not a problem, could it be the dvd drive playing up?

Not enough info to go on.
What sound card? What dvd drive? What speakers? Digital? Analog? Had you altered anything just before this started? What DVD software player? Sure it could be the drive but why do you think so? You could also have a loose connection or dieing speakers. First question, does it do this only with DVDs? Does it play music disks with no trouble? If you're playing internet radio, where the drive isn't used, does the sound still fade? You're sure it's not your sound card, why?

All other sound from cd's and anything else plays fine. I say that the sound card is ok because it happens with the onboard sound as well. You say "dieing speakers"? does this happen?
I altered nothing just installed everything. I use powerdvd to play, good or bad? The sound card is TRUST 511 5.1 Sound Expert Digital Drive:NOV-DVD16R 16X INTERNAL DVD ROM DRIVE 512KB BUFFER speakers  hilips multimedia speaker system A.310 acoustic fusion 310 MMS 313.I hope this is enough to go on. I will fit another dvd drive in to see what happens if you can't come up with any possible reasons why this should be happening. Thanks, Dave |

What program are you using to view DVD's? It might be some trial version or something that wants you to pay for their product by offering a limited version of their product, just so you can try it out.

Yes dieing speakers happen and they do what you've described but they do it with everything not just DVDs and your only problem is with digital sound for movies.
Since the same thing happens with on-board sound, you rightly eliminated the sound card as the cause of the problem. I think you're right about the drive being a problem. One question though, sound cards have, or used to have, seperate cabels for analog or digital sound, depended on your speakers, that were connected from the card to the optical drive. Motherboards also have connections for the same set up. They're not necessary now with XP but if you have one for your set-up and didn't use it I would try that before going shopping. |

Thanks PAM123, I have tried both, just ide connection and direct from disk drive.
I will try a new dvd drive and see what happens, they're cheap enough these days. Many thanks, Dave |

Just one more thought, in case you haven't tried it.
In the options screen on the DVD try changing the sound choice, usually 2 kinds of digital as well as plain stereo. I would suggest trying stereo if you haven't already. I don't have Power DVD5 so I don't know what sound options it has but if they can be altered a little experimenting is certainly in order. Last edited by pam123; 03-07-2005 at 02:31 PM. |
