My son uses my old Dell OptiPlex GX110 to play elementary school level games. (He is dying to play Zoo Tycoon 2) To the best of my knowledge, the video memory is only 8 meg and I would like to upgrade it to at least 16. I really don't know whether an upgrade is possible and so am turning to the experts.
The processor is a 867 megahertz Pentium III, with 15 gig hard drive, 384 ram. Belarc advisor tells me that I have Intel 82810E Graphics Controller [display adapter] and the Dell website states that specifications for this machine include an integrated "Intel Direct AGP Graphics Accelerator with Dynamic Video Memory (DVM) technology architecture", but I cannot find reference to that on the Belarc advisor. Obviously, this is an older machine that I am hoping to extend the life of, but I don't know whether in terms of video memory/speed, it has reached the end of the road. Can this machine be upgraded and if so, how? Thanks in advance |

The only way to upgrade the video is with a PCI video card. The integrated video controller shares system memory, and 8mb is the highest you can set that to. PCI video cards are widely available, but the Optiplex has a very small power supply, which may not be able to handle the extra load of a dedicated video card.
Zoo Tycoon 2 will run okay on this card, and its power requirements aren't too heavy: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-354&depa=0 |
