Backing up a DVD
I have a set of DVD's that My friends borrow from time to time. They broke one already , and I have had to replace it so I decided to back them up and loan out the back ups. The problem is the last CD in the set is copy protected. I checked the DMCA and it is leagal to make back ups of DVD's you own. I am using DVD shrink in conjunction with Nero 6 ultra. Does anyone know a way to get around the copy protection. Copying it is legal so I don't see why I shouldn't be able to back it up. Due to the nature of this question I am willing to have this thread locked and the answer given in PM. Thanks guys

I have been using Magic DVD's trial version for DVD backup, then Nero to burn them back to DVD. Only had one or two out of 100 or so that would not decrypt.

Magic DVD and DVD Decrypter do remove (or bypass) copy protection, just not all available. As I said, there have been a few that I have not been able to back up using any of the software available.

I found the problem is CSS encoding. I also found that clone DVD and anyDVD by slysoft will cut thru it. Thanks for getting me on the right track tireman. Now i dotn have to worry about friends scratching DVDs. And being the harsh moral jerk that I am they can't keep 'em.

I am offically out of Ideas. I tried Nero 6, Magic DVD, DVD Decrypter, Clone DVD, DVD Shrink, and all of those combined with the Slysoft anyDVD driver. The only think I haven't tried is Slysofts CloneDVD2, with anyDVD. Does anyone else know what I could use or do to get around this copy protection. I also don't understand becuase there are 8 DVD's in the set and only the last one is perotected? Could it be an error on the DVD itself?

as long as you have slysoft's any dvd installed in your computer that will automatically bypass the protection, you may use dvd shrink or clone dvd.

As far as I am aware, DVD Decrypter handles every DVD copy protection, so you should be able to rip the DVD with DVD Decrypter. But don't combine it with AnyDVD. Use DVD Decrypter's own ripping routines.
CSS is no problem at all. It's the oldest and most common used DVD copy protection, and DVD Shrink can rip CSS protected DVDs directly. Also AnyDVD can deal with CSS (when AnyDVD is active in the background, you can just copy the files to hdd usind Windows Explorer). RJ

I dont think it was a problem with any thing other than a part on the DVD itself now that i got it to work. I used slysofts Clone DVD 2 which allowed me to see all of the frames and where they were and I just cut out all the previews (Where it would error out all the time) at the end of the DVD and it worked. Just a question though why if it is leagal to make copies of DVD's for yourself does nero not bypass copy protection? I aslo just figured out how to do this with DVD shrink. So I should be good from here on out.

It may be legal making backup copies, but bypassing copy protection is a gray area - and that's what copy protection is for - to block "casual" copying. Nero probably doesn't want to chance getting into legal confrontations.

DVDFab will backup a dvd with no external software and has an option to leave the CSS encryption in place. No problems as of yet. Has a free trial too. This way, your loaned DVD's can't be copied. Just a thought....
