Thoughts on Radeon X800?
Hey I'm wanting to get a pretty decent card for a good price. I came across the Radeon X800. I noticed it only had 128 MB of memory on it... does it come in 256 MB versions? Is it a good card that will run Half Life 2 well and other games like Doom 3 and Farcry? Could I get a version below it and still see good results? what are your thoughts on this card? Thanks

Are you looking at the AGP version or the PCI-E version?
Yep, it's a good card.

There is both a 128mb and 256mb version of the card in both agp and pci-e. either one is more than enough for what you want. this card is really good, you wont be disappointed.

So having 128 MB isn't bad in anyway? I am looking at the PCI Express version... would there be a version with slight less performance for alot less money?

Two bit , i have the x800xt 256 pcie version . it plays any game out now on max rez. You wont be disappointed if you get it. superb card.

Sapphires arnt bad so ive heard. mines an unbranded ati. Not sure if you can get them by msi , they are a good make. To be honest , i dont think x800xt,s are made bad by anyone. If you can afford it get the x850xt , its atis top of the range card and only slightly better than the 800. Either way youl be astounded playing your games with this card, it rules man.

ATI, Powercolor and Sapphire are the safe brands. Go with whichever is cheapest.

OK by the way you guys are reacting to my suggestion it seems that I'm overkilling... I realized if i bought this video card (the X800) I would be spending more on it than my processor (AMD Athlon 64 3200+). Is that foolish? Whats a notch below the X800?

negative, it is not uncommon to spend more on your video card than on your proc, i did the same, if you are a gamer the video card is a little more important than your processor anyway as any A64 proc can handle the games today but the same can not be said for graphics cards, especially if you plan on OC'ing your proc

Ive just finished playin the fear demo , and had it on 1600 x 1200. I cant tell you how good it looks , if you get a lesser card , youl kick yourself.

The step from 128 to 256 ram doesn't really do much for games. If i had a choice between a 256mb card and a 128mb card with a faster GPU, I'd go for the faster GPU. Reverse this for video editing.

Should be ok, but if you start upping your hardware in other places , then id suggest you futureproof yourself and go for a higher output psu. Antec or enermax, are great brands.

That power supply is fine. It's 380 high quality watts, and it's dual rail.

I believe the Radeon X800 consumes far less power as compared to the other cards in its range (6800, 6600GT, X800 Pro, etc) - it only requires the standard power provided by the PCI-Express slot with no supplemental power.
