Toss a coin - do you prefer ATI or Nvidia?
Don't be so quick to jump on Ebay - you can get a 128mb 9200 or 9250 for around 20 quid from Ebuyer. That's going to be worlds better than a 7000 or an old 3D Prophet. |

I recently assembled a PC for a young grandson, and then tested it with two of the games he wanted to play on it -- Crimson Skies and Rogue Squadron. I feel that the currently mounted video adapter's performance is lagging in spots; I also have had problems with getting a game port joystick working for another one he wants, the DOS-based X-Wing Fighter. The MB tech folks suggested trying other PCI slots for the sound card -- that's going to happen soon.
Meanwhile, I am thinking about the video card. Tell me, someone, where the GF 6200 fits in? I have experience with various older GF's, from the TNT2 and Ti 200/ Ti 500, to the Ti4200 and FX 5900. I don't have any experience at all with any ATI cards after that disaster, the Rage Pro 128. I can get a Radeon non-Pro 9600 for substantially less than the $100, but the 9600 Pro, new, is hard to come by in the same price range. I already know that the FX 5200 and FX 5500 just don't have the cojones to do the job, but only the 5700LE fits into the budget. Does the 6200 come in an array of LE/ SE/ NU/ Pro/ GT/ XT/ Ultra gradations, or is it more like the FX 5500 - you get what you get, and that's it? I would just mount my GF-4 in his PC if it would run more of the Dx9 goodies .. but one of his strategy gaming choices demands nothing less than Dx9.

There's plenty of 9600 XT's out there for under $100. If you can justify $140, there's plenty of 9800 Pros out there. Nvidia just doesn't really have any decent DX9 AGP cards below the 6600 - if you want Nvidia that's your best bet for about $110.
