audio lag problems

I am not sure what I did or what I installed.. but for some reason the last 2 weeks I have been getting audio lag.. depending on what im doing it can be really bad or not so bad.. but basically I was able to figure out that the audio lag was synced with when my CPU/HD was processing info (my red light on my PC) now I first thought it was my new ATI drivers cause I just recently installed 5.7 so I totally removed them and reinstalled.. nothing of course.. and like I mentioned the lag can be worse at times then other times.. for example I was watching a 2 GB video file and the audio lag was so bad... but when I play music it will just lag for 1 second intervals once every 20 seoncds.. its really annoying.. now I am almost 100% sure its not anythign with audio because when the audio lag is happening the images/video being dissplayed is lagged too a bit.. such as games skipping (aswell as audio) and videos/movies skipping in synce with the audio skips.. I have no idea what this could be.. but basically I am sure a format will fix the problem cause the problem just appeared.. but I want to avoid that and find the source of the problem..

I also have upgraded my audio drivers

thanks ahead of time..

Scan for viruses and spyware, and examine your background processes.

already did.. no spyware/viruses

used AdAware / AVG Virus Scan Free Edition

My processes seem to be fine at the moment.. I am usally able to spot out any abnormal processes running.. see for yourself..

I think I should just do a format.. unless I can figure this stupid thing out..
