Are we looking for a 2.1 or a 5.1 configuration speaker system? If 2.1, you really should consider the Klipsch GMX speakers...it's hard to beat their sound clarity. If you can't stretch your budget, consider Logitech X-530 for 5.1 speakers.

^Is that you Kram? What happened to your avatar?

Anyway, I second the recomendation of the Klipsch GMX 2.1's. Also take a look at the Logitech Z-2300's.

LOL I've already pmed Kram asking that... he reckons he's sorting a new one, he thinks he's now a new improved Kram. Ya, right, wait until he starts releasing patches to cover the security issues he finds with the new version

If you want just two speakers you won't get as good of sound quality. A 2.1 system (two speakers and a sub) will generally sound better than a 2.0 system because the subwoofer handles the bass. Small desktop speakers simply cannot handle bass. Klipsch does have a 2.0 system, the ProMedia Ultra 2.0's. I have never had a chance to hear them.

The 2.1 (Sub + 2 speakers) setup is called the Logitech X-230.

All the reviews I've read have very mixed feelings about the 2.0 speakers. One of the common complaints is the inability to reach the higher volume levels.

You either get 5.1 or you don't. If you buy two speakers and a sub you will get 2.1 sound. The PC systems are not sold seperately they all come in one box. The X230's are basicly what you are looking for. They are the same as the X-530's minus the rear and center speakers.

ah yes i remember now from my home receiver , 5.1, 6.1,7.1........first number is speakers , second is sub.................ok , then i would need to enable 2.1 in windows.............i keep the speakers up above me on a shelf, i know sub is really non directional, it would be ok in this case to keep it on floor under desk yes?

You can put the sub anywhere. I have mine under my desk. In some cases you can get a rather boomy sound doing that, however.
