audio recording trouble

Hi,

I am having problems recording sound onto my computer via the microphone. I have tried using sound recorder to test the microphone and get nothing when I playback, I have also tried to access the volume control under sound recording in the multimedia and sound properties menu and it informs me that there is a problem with the sound hardware and it may be necessary to install mixer devices using the hardware installation wizard in the control panel. I am not sure what this message means and if the mike I am using is faulty or what. I attempted reinstalling the audio drives without any luck and the chipset is nVIDIA nFORCE2 400.

Completely remove all the sound card drivers and utilities and reinstall again. You may want to check the manufacture's site for the lastest ones. You can use a little cassette recorder to test the mic.
