Playing the same mpeg file in quicktime works fine. This happens on both mpegs and wmv files. Please dont say use a different player, as i really like using windows media player PLEASE HELP! |

Try installing a codec pack. I recommend K-Lite.

Uninstall and reinstall the sound card - or remove it completely and re-enable and reinstall the onboard audio.

Ok done that...
Removed sound card drivers/software. Now have tried to reinstall the onboard sound (to keep it simple) and still have no sound. When triying to use the onboard sound card software to configure sound everytime i try and start it or set it up it displays message "no wave in" Also before I did remove my sound card drivers/software, whilst using the creative software diagnostics it displayed 1/3 tests failed when i looked it said that the windows wave in was not functioning (or something to that affect) PLEASE HELP!!!!!! |

Windows is still having fits and complaining about "no wave in" or something to that affect Im guessing this problem will never be solved as i work in IT support and none of my collegues could solve it! |

well, have you tried a soft reinstall of the OS? Are you sure that all the BIOS settings for audio are proper..what do you feel about a soft install of the OS?

well, a soft install is a installation over the existing one without a format of the windows partition.
You have already installed Windows twice..well, what do you see in the Dev Mgr..Qn marks..exclamations, whats the device status... Okay..have you tried installing your sound card on another PC..Are you sure that you have completely removed the drivers for On-board sound before you enabled and installed the drivers for the new sound card? Pls verify. Thanks. Last edited by edison; 01-23-2006 at 09:41 AM. |

You seam to be confused... This problem has come off the first one. My current problem is that I have no audio and the menu is greyed out I have no audio no matter what drivers I install. Windows is complaining about "no wave in"

Microsoft doesn't care how many times you install the OS on the SAME computer - you may just have to call them on the phone to reactivate it.
Try a repair reinstall, if that doesn't work, nuke and pave it. It has to be a Windows issue causing this. |

If you have a Gigabyte motherboard you may need to disable the onboard audio in the BIOS settings. i have a Gbyte 7DXR and had to disable the onboard audio this way to get my PCI soundcard to work properly.

Somemore intresting facts i have found out. 1. After I play a video i can swich over to onboard sound and sound then works (to get soundcard sound back i need to reboot) 2. When you play the video, the sound goes but the video still plays however the video keeps stoping and getting stuck and as I said before this is only in media player! Any ideas |

Wait a minute - if you are using a sound card you must disable the onboard sound in the bios and make sure all its drivers are uninstalled - or you WILL get conflicts. You can't just "switch over" and expect things to work right. It's a total "either or" - you can't have both.

You've disabled the on board in the bios, did you uninstall the drivers for it as well?

Please share your solution for other people's benefit. That's how we work around here. If you take, you are also expected to give.
