Graphics card driver problem

Hi,

I like to play pc games and the recent ones require a better graphics card than the one I had so I got an nvidia 6600 and it installed ok. A couple of my games tell me I need to upgrade to the latest driver - and I notice typical driver issues with the current driver (like flashing elements) but I have tried to upgrade the driver (from nvidia) but when I do all I get when I restart is a black screen so I then have to go into safe mode and uninstall the new driver.

Anyone have any ideas how I can solve this problem?
Thanks for reading.

Did you uninstall the old driver before installing the new one?

I just upgraded my Nvidia drivers a few weeks ago and this how I did it. First download the new driver and save it to your hard drive. Then you need to go to your Add/Remove programs and click the change/remove button for the nvidia drivers. It will prompt you to restart. When Windows starts back up, I believe it does the found new hardware wizard. If it does, when it asks the location, browse to where you saved the driver and install it. If not, just go to the driver file and install that way when you are at your desktop. After one more restart you should be good to go.

Thanks guys.

I did uninstall as you both suggested and then installed the new driver and that worked. Thanks.

Note:
I had tried something similar before but had problems and it wasn't straightforward this time either. I had to put my old driver installation disk in to find a 'nv4_mini.sys' file, then a '.dll' file, in my Windows folder, then another file (I don't remember which) in the windows/system folder. I don't know why this was.

Anyway, it works now - thanks again for your assistance.

Send a message via MSN to Malta Soron
IIRC the setup of the recent nVidia drivers prompts you if you have an old driver installed. When I update the driver I always open the new driver setup, let in uninstall the old driver, reboot, and install the new driver.
