C-media onboard sound card drivers refuse to load

I have a V333U m/board with built-in C-Media sound card, which used to run on Win98SE without any problem. After I upgraded to Win2K, the sound card isn't recognised. When I try to reinstall it, it goes through all the process, but then stops with "Cannot load cmuda.sys". Does anyone know whether there is a different version of this driver for Win2K? I've downloaded all the versions I could find anywhere on the net, which turned out to be only two: 5.12.1.39 and 5.12.1.20, but the PC won't accept/load either. Every time I boot Win2k, it "finds" a new hardware device and tries to install it - same result. I tried going through hardware manager and reinstalling the drivers: same result. After searching on Google for threads like mine (there are plenty out there, so I guess a lot of people are having this problem) I haven't found a solution, so I've had to disable onboard sound in the BIOS. One other clue: I bought a cheapo Mime sound card (I'm not interested in studio quality, just normal sound) and it wouldn't recognise that either, so maybe it's a BIOS problem?

I doubt that the problem is being caused by BIOS. If it were, then the sound would not work with Win 98SE either.
Did you try to manually install the drivers?

Thanks for replies. Yes, I did try manually installing the drivers. I tried just abut everything with them short of covering them in ketchup and eating them. Copied them from the CD-ROM onto the HD and tried from there, bcs that worked for me one on another problem. Nix.

Thanks for the link - I'll try it now and report back.

Thanks glc: downloaded the package you suggested and tried (1) disinstalling everything, then (2) reinstalling from that package. Nix. Went through the whole "found new hardware" routine, but at the end - as usual - said couldn't load cmuda.sys. From h/ware manager tried updating drivers: gave me - as usual - the message Handle not valid. Same as ever. Oh yeah, and also during Windows bootup got the errormsg "smwizard.exe has caused an error and will be closed". (Messages approximate, as I'm translating back from an Italian system I have installed). Back to square minus 1...
