Nero Recode 2 and DVD backups

I have a 3 year old son that loves to watch dvd's. The only downside to this is he also likes to "help" me get them out and return them to the case which can be pretty rough on a disc. I know that I can legally make a backup copy of movies that I own and that's why I bought a dvd burner. I got a Lite On 1693 and it came with a Nero/Power Dvd bundle that includes Nero Recode 2.
Will Recode 2 allow me to make a copy of a protected disc or will I have to buy a program like DVD Clone 2 ? *Please take note that I only want to make backups of movies that I own and I am not trying to violate any laws or board rules *

None of the commercial suites like Nero or Roxio that I know of will do copy protected backups.

Get this: DVD Shrink. It's free and legal. It is legal to copy DVDs you own. It is legal to use this program so long as you don't use it for illegal purposes.

It's basically source and target. Copy the entire DVD (full backup). If the DVD has a lot of trailers, just copy the main movie; that will raise the quality of the copy by reducing how much you will copy. This is reauthoring. In that case, the menus won't work, although the ff and rev will.

If DVD Shrink doesn't copy, the copy protection may have been updated...especially if dealing with Sony disks. Then try DVDFAb Decrypter, also free. The Decrypter will rip the files from the DVD to a temp folder. Burn the resulting files with Shrink.
