Will ATI graphics card work with NFORCE 4 ULTRA motherboard?
Like the title says, will an ATI Graphics card: (X1800XT) work with a ABIT AN8 ULTRA (nforce4) motherboard?
If it does will anything bad happen.. any lowered performance of the graphics card? Also.. A question about the graphics card itself, is it known to overheat and be really hot? Also how much wattage does it take? I got a 430 watt TT, it works with my 7800GT CO, so it should it work with an X1800XT? Thanks. |

I don't see why it wouldn't work.
If they are both PCI-E or both AGP, then you should be fine. However, 430W is pushing it for both a 7800GT and an X1800XT. Use it at your own risk. |

MakeYourself has it right.
There is no compatibility problems using an ATI card in an nForce chipset. I have one now and its fine. I agree that 430w is a tad on a the lowside. It might work, but if you find any lockups, thats the first thing to check. I wouldn't worry about heat. As long as your case has good airflow, it should be fine.

ATI recommends a 450 watt or greater power supply for it's X1800 cards.

It will work fine. I run an ATI card in my ASUS board which has a NFORCE4 Ultra chipset. No problems. You really should consider dropping in a new PSU has been mentioned. A 430 watt PSU is pretty light for that card.

ah jfk, remember having that one conversation between ATI and nvidia. I admit that your really right
 Switching over to a X1800XT from my Nvidia 7800GT. X1800XT IS better than the 7800GTX cheaper too.Only problem I have is that it IS power hungry... when I built this computer I guess i got a pretty small power supply, skimped  i'll think about getting a new one, see how this one does.What are things I should look for if there isn't enough power? Sounds kinda queer.. but when I play NFS: Most Wanted, I recently get these lockups, for a couple seconds and looping of the sound... It might be the video card because it runs at 70C at load, but I'm not sure. could this be the power supply problem or what... it might be. But what do I look for if the PS is not strong enough??? |

Lockups, shutdowns, reboots, etc. can all be symptoms of a lack of power (as well as overheating).
