1st Generation of DX10 Cards

Am I the only one who thinks that the 1st generation of DX10 compatible cards (G80 and R600) won't be worth getting over a current high-end gpu?

I mean, come to think about it. Game developers will continue to support DX9 in future games along with the new DX and the 1st generation cards won't even fully support DX10 to begin with. DX10 probably won't be fully supported until the second or maybe even the third generation, so i don't see why I wouldn't want to buy a high-end gpu now and upgrade to a DX10 card when the second generation will be out. See my point?

Having said that, a 7950GX2 would probably have the power to play most games that comes out in the next 1 or 2 years with high fps and max quality (without DX10 effects) at a resolution of 1280x1024 or 1024x768.
By the time the need to upgrade arises, there will be fully compatible DX10 cards at lower prices and with reasonable power consumption.

Personally, I'm building a new pc when Intel's Core 2 Duo (conroe) comes out and i'm seriously thinking of getting a really high end gpu like the 7950GX2 or a X1900XTX to go through the entire first generation of DX10 cards until I upgrade again

First post btw. Nice community you got here!

You are probably right. DX10 will support things like DX9 doesn't (I think more complex shaders), so a good DX10 game will have extra "eye candy" on a DX10 card. But as you said, higher end DX9 cards should still play the games fine until a couple generations later.

Exactly. That little extra eye candy won't make much of a difference.

I agree. The only people that should buy the DX10 cards should be the ones that have to have the best all the time.
