hd tv tuner and sound issues

I am currently looking for an hdtv tuner and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a good one to get.

Also I have been using my onboard audio (7.1 channel) and i had just two speakers plugged into the front channel. I upgraded to a 5.1 channel system and plugged into the center/sub the front and the rear. The problem is the front channel wasnt working. I then plugged in the original speakers in the front channel and it still didnt work. The center and rear channels work fine. Is there a chance that I fried the front channel. It doesnt seem loose. Ive been checking all over msi sound software and there are a ton of options but it doesnt seem like there should be any reason for the front channel to not work.

thanks

Did you reconfigure the speakers using the Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices?

yea i went through the control panel and tried to configure it and it still didnt work then i set it to default and it didnt work. MSI has some software for the sound that is kinda wierd and i set that back to defaul too and neither sets of speakers work. I pulled out my board to see if i could see any burn spots but i didnt notice anything. I wasnt even sure if one part of it could go bad by itself. Is there any way to make sure everything is 100 percent back to default. My line in can be configured to be the final channel of the audio (the satalites) and i wasnt sure if maybe the front channel had something like that happen to it.

Alll my stuff uses SoundMax. Don't know what's on that MSI. If you have SoundMax, open the panel and click on the moon and stars icon in the top left. That will open the speaker configuration wizard. If you don't have SM, post what the sound is and we'll see if we can find a solution.

I'm going to let someone else answer the tuner comparison question as I have no experience with them.

Yes, that's true. But your mobo should have come with jumpers in the default postition to enable the rear ports. Check your mobo manual for proper jumper positions. If you didn't remove them to install front panel audio, they should be in the proper position.

Check the htpc section at AVSforums. They're the experts.

I am not sure if this helps you, but it seems relevant...

I have an MSI K8N-Neo4 Platinum Mobo. Attached to one of the PCI slots is my ATI TV-Wonder Pro card. When I first installed it, I was so frustrated, I could not get the sound to match. Turned out, I was trying to listen to the line-out on the playback end with the recording end muted. I selected the line-out in the recording section and raised the volume to max, then muted the line-out in the playback section. Works like a charm now. I controlled the overall sound with the main wave out.

I hope that gives some assistance.
