dell 991 flat screen crt

I have this dell 991 at randon it shut off and comes right back on, all the data is present. Sometimes it may shut of severial times in a row 4 or 5 then it stays on, I am a hvac/r/e to I know my way aroud circuit boards and away of the dangers of working on monitors.

I never opeaned it up yet, does it have a fan?????,it does get hot,is there a thermal overload??? or is it a signal from the vidio card its a nividia 32 ddr geforce 2 gts. screen is .1024 x 768 @ 85 hz

other than these few shut downs at random ,2 to about 15 times a day the monitor color is great. checked for loose cables and boards.

sort of afraid to plug it into my notebook. It iis on a ups and everything seems fine, by the way the system is a dell 8100 running me yet and 512 rambus with a 1.7 p4.

to me it seems like a self reseting breaker or termal overload. It's just like pusing the on/off button on the monitor severial times.

I usually don't worry about this rig but the backlight went out on my gateway notebook, I would like one box to count on,till it gets back. Thanks for any ideas or help I can go buy a new lcd and even a vidio board but I,m just one of those guys that needs to figure out why it broke and can I fix it. Its a matter of furthering my skills not money. Walt

Have you tried different resolutions and refresh rates?

If the monitor shows a message "No Video Present" then you probably have a problem with the video card(going bad, overheating due to dust in the heatsink). If the screen just goes blank, probably have a component in the monitor starting to die. If the ON lite goes off, probably monitor power supply/if green lite stays on but blank screen, probably the High Voltage transformer/green lite goes orange, video circuit in monitor going bad or a bad video cable.

Tried different resolutions and refresh rates,no good

It does as flanzi1 describes the green light stays light , I hear a click..screen goes black...click and it back on in under 2 seconds..............sometimes it will click 2 4 or6 times. It sound like something is kickout and right back in. I sure if I open the case I'll be able to determine whats clicking, but by the above description sounds like the high voltage transformer.

Are they worth replacing????? my guess is only if you have a spare from another monitor & of course can do it yourself. Otherwise as cheap as monitors have become its a no-brainer

If the monitor is out of warranty, then it's not worth fixing.
