Problems with Nvidia 7900 Gt.
Comp Spec's.
MotherBoard: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard PSU: Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply Proc: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N563-AX Geforce 7900GT CO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card 2 Gig's of Ram. Now it's working fine, but in games i know people with 7200's or basically cards lower than mine that are running on the same settings that are getting about the same FPS. For example in Call of Duty 2, everything on High running at DX7 i get about 65-125 FPS (capped at 125). In Counter-Strike Source, with settings to get out the best FPS I get around 70-101 (capped at 101). I know of atleast one person that was having problems with a 7900 he just bought. I was wondering if anybody else on here heard of any problems with it and maybe heard of any solutions. PS: I have the latest drivers. |

I dont see those FPS numbers as a problem - the human eye can't see anything over 60 or so anyway.

Have your friends turn on AA and AF.
You should be able to run at a high resolution with those options turned up and receive high frame rates. Lower cards will be able to play those games no problem, but if they bump those up, their frame rates will suffer.

Why are you running COD2 in DX7 mode? Your card can handle DX9 fine. Unless you are running a 2560 resolution or something. Speaking of resolutions, not only can't you compare performance without knowning AA/AF settings, the same goes for resolution.

Looking up into the sky in Cod2 on dx9 i get 70 something fps. Actually moving, i get more like 30-40 fps, and it's choppy. Source i am playing in dx9...That's fine. Bf2 i get about 40 FPS everything on high. Unless i am mistaken my card should be giving me a lot better performance... |

What drivers are you running? You say latest, but what version.

How does it perform in benchmarks. Like run 3dmark06 or 05 and see how other people are performing versus you with the same equipment. You can do that after running 3dmark and going on orb.
Also do you have the latest patches for all your games? Also I know that there was a dual core optimization patch for cod2. Is vsync on? Did you have a card before this, if so which? If you had a ati card you need to reformat windows xp and reinstall new nvida drivers, ive heard of conflicts such as this happening when people switch with brands. Did you use drivercleanerpro to properly delete the old drivers before installing the new ones? Its not overheating is it? Nvidia cards have a very sensitive thermal control system in which it throttles the clocks when the card is overheating. And last but not least, i have to ask is, the pcie connector from your psu is connected? Ive heard this problem happening on old agp cards in which if you didnt connect the cable it downlocked. And there should be no reason what so ever that your card cant handle dx9, its a dx9 card. DX7 is for very weak cards or some that arent dx9. And on that counterstike performance, is that with all settings up on highest possible? Because in that case, its a perfectly normal fps. Last edited by Mr.Ferrari; 07-26-2006 at 02:16 AM. |

in 3dmark 05 it got 5079, which on ORB would of been the least by close to 3000. My card is running around 40C PCI-E Connecter is connected The person that i talked about earlier in this thread had a 7900 GT OC Edition, had the same problem in DX9 but got maybe like 10+ better fps than me. In CS:S I have Casey's config (which if you do not know, is supposed to help for better registration and fps) So some settings are on high some on low some on med...it's all over. |

Alright we can rule out a psu problem, and you said you have the latest drivers. And we can rule out a heat issue ( even though I doubt thats your idle temp not your load, nonethless your load shouldnt be much higher)
So one last thing. Did you own a ati card in the past? If so did you reformat before installing the new drivers for your card? And did you use driver cleaner to properly get rid of old card drivers before installing this new card? Or is this your just built computer. All I can say is, if all else fails, theres always rma. Ive heard alot of CO and KO editions having alot of problems. Last edited by Mr.Ferrari; 07-26-2006 at 03:15 AM. |

Dunno bud, ive never owned one so I cant say. With my X1800XT at stock speeds im getting around 150fps in the video stress test. With everything @high with 1280x1024 res. With my p4 overclock at a medium.
What res are you running at? Last edited by Mr.Ferrari; 07-26-2006 at 06:36 AM. |

Thats what I meant
. Well I really cant provide any more help then this. Your system seems fine. You followed the advice on top? Latest drivers? Useing drivercleanerpro? Wait and see if a 7900gt owner can help you out. And is this the only game where this happens? |

Just a bit of fyi, before going sli right now, the new G80's from nvidia should be coming out this august or september (i think it was august). And they are the first of the new DX10 generation. Before spending all that cash on 2 DX9 cards, I would definately look into dx10.
Just fyi, but its your system, do as you please .

That is totally unneccesary. Using Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode to remove any former ATI or NVIDIA drivers is fine.I would try DCP in safe mode and remove your drivers. Reboot and reinstall the latest drivers. This sounds like a driver or hardware issue. See if the driver reinstall helps. If not, I would RMA the card. I have read in several forums of problems with some of the eVGA and XFX factory overclocked 7900GT's. They seem to run a higher failure rate. FWIW, I realize I don't have the same hardware as you, but in the CSS stress test, with all settings at high, HDR enabled, reflect all, 6XAA and 16XAF, I get 161 FPS.

Well you dont need to, but its a well known fact that when users were switching from ati to nvidia, alot of people experianced many conflictions and issues with the card and were usually fixed with a reformat.
Im not saying its required, but if your having a problem, and your in this specific situation, it might fix it. |

This is a brand new build so...it's the first card.
I'll try DCP and see how that works out. I had this computer for about a month with the card, would it be to late to RMA it to newegg? Also If it isn't to late, how much do you think those new DX10 card would be running at price wise, and do you think i could RMA it then. |

Dont get your hopes up for dx10. Prcing will be top tier ($$$) and availability is questionable. I suggest you go with a decent single card right now. I would definately rma, and see if you can get a normal 7900gt. Other great choices are 7950GX2, X1900XT/X, X1800XT...

I went ahead and installed drivers, did the dcp and everything else and got even lower benchmarks then before
I went and called evga and told them and they said it sounds like i got a bad card and to RMA it through them. They're going to send me a new card. |

Ah great to know it worked out. Vsync basically locks/limits the framerate to the refresh rate of your monitor. If your refresh rate is 60hz then your frame rate will be locked to 60hz. Alot of times people forget to disable this.

Mr Ferrari - he's not the original poster. I would keep Vysnc enabled - if you've ever seen 'tearing' when your FPS is really high (like 120) Vsync will control that. No need to have FPS over 60 anyhow as your monitor can't display any more than it's refresh rate - not to mention you can't tell the difference.
