Video Card, RAM, or something else

Hey everybody,

The past few weeks I have notice my computer doesn't respond, lags, then computer crashes which I will have to restart my computer. This is when I was using Windows 2000 Pro. So the next day I installed Windows XP PRO SP1, when I finished installing everything this still happens when I visit the web (FIREFOX AND IE), look at videos on or on the computer (youtube, google video, "MY OWN VIDEOS ON MY COMPUTER", and etc...) So from my perspective I think its either my video card which is a NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 or my 512MB RAM. People from other forums told me its my video card but I want to make sure if its really my video card, ram, or both! Btw, I know for sure no ad-awares, spywares, malaware, virus, trojans, and etc...

MY SPECS:

Intel P4 2.4GHZ
512MB RAM
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 (Driver Version – 7.1.8.9)
Intel ECS PT800CE-A
Maxtor 114GB
Windows XP Pro SP1

*EDIT - also when I just visited hardforum.com, went to my thread, tried to scroll down, then mouse freezes, doesnt respond, then I have to restart my computer ONCE again.

Have you checked the temp your CPU is running at? Do you have any software that came with your mobo that you can install to monitor temps? Otherwise, it certainly wouldn't hurt to upgrade that video card anyway.

I wouldn't hurt to upgrade the card but since just started you'd better run a few tests.
Start with the memory : http://www.memtest.org/
Also check Event Viewer at the time of the freeze to see if it can give you a lead.

My PSU is a 350W. Before it worked very, very well.
btw on the event viewer: I just have EAPOL, WinMgmt, WmdmPmSN, and EventSystem, and LoadPerf

I just took the memtest86...it took very long!!! IT took about 1:13:46...and it still not done yet so I just quitted and I got this recorded down!

Memtest does take a while. It doesn't ever quit. You can let it run for a week if you want. To me, 5 passes is enough. Some will tell you 6-7. But after 5 passes and no errors, chances are very unlikely that you'd have gotten any errors on the 6th or 7th pass. Try to check on those temps.

My temps are perfect from my perspective.

TEMP1:33C
TEMP2:29C
TEMP3:23C
HD0:41C
TEMP1:40C

I don't see anything wrong!?

Those temps look fine to me. Do you have another computer you can test the video card in? If so, put it in the other computer and see if it does the same thing. That would rule out the video card.

TO cadlewv - i wish I did have an extra video card that I can test it out...

I can see the yellow exclamation marks but that's all I can make out.
If they correspond with the freezes please double click line and tell us what it says in Event Properties.
Also you checked both Application and System?

With firefox you can left-click to increase the image. All of his exclamation marks except one have to do with product activation. The oddball has WinMgmt next to it. Maybe double click that item and upload a picture of it.

1. Install the following chipset drivers:
http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_H...nPro_V509A.zip

2. Install the following video card drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.31.html

3. Install SP2 for WinXP.

4. Install a fresh copy of DirectX from Windows Update, optional components.

Hey glc - I have just instaleld the chipset diriver you have told me to install

The nvidia card driver you told me to install does not support my video card and also I'll download SP2 asap. Anymore advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Okay - in that case, load up Windows Update, it should have a video driver update in the hardware section. That's what I use for M64 cards.

Hmm...right now I cannot seem to run Windows Update! It's been lagging me for the last 30min when I go to that website.
