Monitor flickers using DVI input but not analog

As the title says, my monitor flickers excessivly when using the DVI input. I noticed it happens most often when I use my webbrowers (IE and FF) or when I access the NVIDIA control panel (or right click on the NVIDIA icon in my taskbar). When I use the analog input everything if fine. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 204b and my video card is an NVIDIA Geforce 3 TI 200 (yes it's old, no jokes please ). I upgraded my driver to the latest one and lowered my resolution settings and refresh rate to anything between 75 and 70 hz (as recommended in the troubleshooting guide) and it still has problems.

My question is could it be a problem with the DVI input on my monitor? I could just stick with the analog input but when I upgrade I definitly want to use the DVI. If the problem is my DVI input on the monitor I'd like to know now because I can still return the monitor.

Have you tried the monitor on another system? Then you should be able to determine if it's the monitor or your system. Also, check the obvious - is the monitor cable is loose, or damaged? Try another DVI cable if you can.

I don't have another system I can check it on but perhaps one of my friends does, I'll have to ask around.

I can try a new higher quality DVI cable. Do you think that could be the problem? The DVI cable I was using was brand new (it came with the monitor), I assumed it would be okay.

The general consensus seems to be that the monitor is okay but that older video cards can have issues with it. I found someone with a similar problem here:

I'm sure its possible the older cards don't mix well, or the cable is bad. I think you'll just have to use the process of elimination by testing on another system, and another DVI cable if you have one available. I'd try the monitor on another system before buying any new parts.

Is your monitor an LCD? If it is, try setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz.

Thanks for your help guys. The refresh rate is currently 60 hz and I still get flickering. I will try a new cable tonight.

Okay, it seems the problem is my dinosaur of a video card. When I hook the monitor up to another computer via DVI, it works just fine. I guess I need to upgrade my video card. Thanks again for all your help.
