Question pc dvi to vga lcd?

I recently purchased a Samsung LN-S2341W lcd tv. I'm going back and forth with various plug in combinations. I tried the DVI from my video card ( ATI 9600 256mb) to HDMI on the tv but can't resize the screen which is too wide. I plugged in my vga cable and the picture looks decent. What I was wondering is if there would be any improvement in picture by getting a DVI from my PC to the VGA on the tv? I just read that the HDMI is not PC compatible so that explains a lot. So do I have any other options for an even better picture? Thanks.

You should be able to set the appropriate resolution in the properties of display.

Nope. Even though the connection is a different one, the signals themselves are the same.

That's wrong. HDMI can be used with a PC. There are even some graphics cards with a HDMI port.
Didn't you say that you connected DVI to HDMI and it worked ? You just need to choose a different resolution, that's all.
With a digital connection you get the best picture, better than with VGA.

after looking at the manual it says that the "HDMI jack does not support PC connection". When I used DVI to HDMI I got a great picture but the screen was too wide and too tall. I tried different resolutions using the ATI control center as well as the display settings in control panel. The best picture size was with 1280x720 but the screen is too wide and a little too tall. I tried others but got a bad flickering picture. Max resolution on this tv is 1920x1080.

I'm only familiar with Nvidia's display properties, but I would think that ATI would have some kind of Ovescan/underscan fine tuning ability somewhere in there. You could try downloading a copy of powerstrip and set a custom resolution with that.
