Upgrade from 9800 pro -> x1600 pro?
The x1600 pro costs about $130 and I was thinking about an upgrade (only have AGP), I don't really wanna start a whole new system for a few years. Even with a 9800 pro my computer still does pretty well with newer games, but would the x1600 pro be a worthy upgrade? I have no idea what the performance difference would be, I wish there was a place where you could compare something like that really easily (maybe there is?). Thanks for any input.
edit: I was lookin to spend more money, but saw this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131427 Any opinions on that one for the price of about $90? Last edited by coolcps; 10-16-2006 at 03:54 PM. |

From what I've been able to find, that would not be a significant upgrade. It does bench maybe 10 to 20% higher, to me that's not worth spending the money. I'd wait till I could afford a Nvidia 7800GS, this just wipes any ATI AGP card ever made, even the X850XT.

Wow glad to hear the 7800GS is good. I was just looking to upgrade my system once more before it it totally obsolete (3 year old system, only AGP) and I bought a 7800GS and another 1gig of RAM to replace my 9800pro. They come in 2 days I cant wait. Everything I read about the 7800GS is very positive.
I will let you know how much better it is when I get it in. |

You should be very happy with it. I have had absolutely no problems with mine in SLI. The card is in a nice sweet spot for power/price.

That card looks pretty sweet, but really how much of a difference would that make with my old processor holding stuff back? I guess I'm not really looking for a huge difference in performance anyway, and the fact that I can sell my 9800 pro to a friend for $50 makes the x1600pro more like $50 to me, and for $50 I'd be happy with not a huge difference. But that 7800GS looks very sexy, so if I got something like that how much would my system be a bottleneck on that?

Your system is still plenty fast enough, a 2.4 GHz P4 on 800 FSB is far from being an "old slow" processor. The video card makes the most difference in gaming, followed by ram quantity. Processor speed is a distant third.
