sound issues while playing avi files

I have a bunch of avi files on my computer. I also recently obtained a bunch of .rm files. After watching the rm files I decided to watch an avi file and suddenly the sound is not working for it. I've checked the obvious (speakers are plugged in, turned on, volume checked, no change has been made to the sound drivers because windows can still make its system event noises). I'm using divx 3.1 codec and in the past just using that codec allowed me to view avi files flawlessly. I decided to try and uninstall the codec (including deleting the registry files for that codec and any other place in the system where a file related to the codec would be located) and then reinstall it. It's still not working. The video shows just fine, but no sound to it. BTW: am using WMP9.

basics of my system: WinXP, SP2, several GB HDD space, 1.5 GB RAM.

Any thoughts?

Try installing the K-Lite codec pack.

The K-Lite codec pack did end up working. I ended up unintentionally having the setup replace the default player of WMP10 with the classic version, but the sound seems to work with it now.
