What video card for video editing?
I am building myself a computer for video editing and graphic design. So far here are the specs.
CPU: AMD 4200+ X2 (the new core duos are probably better for this, say E6300 or 6400) MOBO: ASUS M2N32-SLI-WF RAM : 4x1GB of Kingston ddr2 667 HDD : 2x300GB + 1x74GB Raptor Here are just the basics, I will have all of this along with a 20" wide screen and 19". I was wondering if I would need a high-end video card like a 7900GTX or lets say just a 7900GS> No games will be played on this computer. Thank You |

Go for the Core 2 Duo and if you don't need all the bells and whistles on the mobo: Asus P5B
For the ram, start with 2gigs, XP can't use much more than 3.2 gig. For video editing, don't need that much of a card, something like an ATI x1300xt would fine.

I have a 7900GS and it's a great card. I usually can't stand BB but they do have a pretty good price on a PNY 7900GS right now @ $150.

ew, if your gonna get a 7900 make sure it is the gt.. No on the Intel CPU also, Intel more expensive for the same thing and do not support HT.. Stick with the 4 gig, you will use it in the future, especially if you are thinking about upgrading to Vista..

For video editing *any* 7900 card is gross overkill. VIDEO EDITING IS NOT GAMING. This is ALL you need:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125027 - under 50 bucks. However, if you need dual DVI, this is what you need: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131318 You also don't want a SLI board. If you want AMD, get a single slot NForce board (M2N-E), if you want Intel (I recommend a Core 2 Duo over anything in AMD's catalog) get a single slot P965 board (P5B). |

I would also add that if this is for graphic design and video editing, getting a workstation card like a Quadra, Fire or Wildcat would serve you much better than a regular consumer card. You'll get truer RGB color (much truer - don't under estimate how poorly consumer cards display RGB) which is a must for video work and graphic design.

Going to an entry level Fire or Quadro isn't much more expensive though. The 4 above are all dual head, they both have cheaper single head cards. |
