DOS game doesn't recognise sound card

Hello.I have downloaded "Sam and Max hit the road" but it doesn't play the sounds although I run the "SAM" batch file.In the game menu SFX and Sound are "disabled".My souncard is a Realtec AC97 Audio under Windows XP home edition.What should I do?
