Question with WMP/possible audio or video codecs

My computer was working fine since I bought it...but I wanted to partition the drive via Partition Magic. I ran into some problems with it because it messes with the boot.ini file. Anyway I had to sent it to the shop for a couple days because I couldn't get it to work. They got it working again but now I have a problem when I play .avi files.

I get the "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." error.

I keep these .avi files on an external HD so they shouldn't have been affected by the work done at the shop and they worked perfectly fine before hand. I've tried downloading every codec I could find, thinking that may somehow fix it, but that was to no avail. I'm definately no computer guru, but I feel I've done everything I can with my knowledge short of taking it back to the shop.

I had some problems playing audio files at first as well, but I fixed that when I rolled back the driver. I think the driver I removed came with a new Windows update recently but I just haven't been able to fix the error message.

Any one have any ideas?

Thanks.

You could use VLC player. It plays every codec out there. You could also get the K-Lite Codec Pack and use WMP Classic. The K-Lite codec pack puts WMP Classic on par with VLC.
