Sound card - working but not?

I have a problem with my sound and I thought I would ask for advice.

Here's what happened: I just built this computer, and I was updating Windows. When the computer restarted, my sound was gone.

Not muted, not diminished, just gone. The funny thing is that Windows says the card is fine, the driver is up to date, and even shows the volume climbing and decreasing, corresponding with any sound that should be coming out. Essentially, everything with the sound card is reading as fine, except that no sound comes out! I've tried multiple speaker systems and headphones, but still no sound.

I used a system restore to well before I installed the updates, but no luck. I've checked for all possible mutings, etc. and re-installed the drivers.

Any ideas?

In case its of any concern:

I'm running Vista, motherboard is a Gigabyte P35-DS3P, Sound card is Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer

Thanks!

I just wanted to say that I fixed it. I switched the PCI slot and that made all the difference for whatever reason. If a moderator could delete this thread that would be great, thanks!

Hum, I am not sure about this case.. You have ever heard the sound from your PC, right? Never experience that...
