screen resolution wont stay set

every time I restart my computer I have to reset my screen resolution. A friend thinks it could be the mobo, or ram not communicating , I just replaced a bad hdd if that matters.

thanks

Give your full specs, please. Do you have the correct video drivers installed?

my friend thinks I might have had an electrical surge that did some damage to the mobo, ram
or maybe the video card (I do have a surge protector)

forgot to mention when I open somethings like my anti-spyware it will make the screen go black and the page will be so big I cant close it ( the close button is off the monitor) I have to use hot keys windows-m then right click on that page and click maximize if I click restore it will be to big again

Are you running Vista or something else?? (And tell us what). Vista may be the main problem, especially if you upgraded to it on existing hardware.
