screaming sound card
Every once in a while when I boot up my machine (about one in 15 boots), I get no sound but a terrible, high pitch buzz or beep. If I reboot my rig, it goes away. It didn't do this when I was using onboard audio but it started doing once I installed my CHAINTECH AV-710 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card - Retail . Is it just a bad card or might I have installed it improperly? I'm using this mobo:

Is the sound coming from the sound card's speakers, or from the case's internal speaker?

Could try to reseat it and see if that helps. Also look for any new and updated drivers.

Any idea where I can find a driver update? For some reason it's not on Chaintech's website and I can't find it anywhere else, either. Any hints?

just went to the link at driverfiles.net. what am i missing? clicked everywhere and can't find a link to download the the driver.

Wow. I actually don't see where that file gets downloaded from either. I thought the exe file was it, but just realized that it was an exe.

I updated the driver for the audio chipset, the same ones that shadow pointed out from VIA. It didn't take care of the problem, though. I turned my PC on this morning and had the same screaming issue as before. Any other suggestions?

Might have to either go back to onboard audio, or get a new card if you can't good working drivers for this one.
Also, did you uninstall the audio drivers for your onboard audio before you installed the sound card? |

If you can see the drivers in add/remove programs, then uninstall them from there.
Most likely, you'll have to get to the device manager, and expand where it says sound controllers. Right click on the onboard sound, and choose uninstall. Then I when you reboot, go into bios, and disable the onboard sound. |

Thanks for all your help so far!
I did as you suggested but, unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. When I booted up after the uninstall and BIOS change, I got a slightly different (and slightly more terrible) buzzing. Any other ideas? |

Did you remove the sound card and try onboard yet?

I was using only on-board before and I never had any problems with it. It was only when I switched to using the sound card that the problem came up.

Best bet is probably get a different sound card, one with good driver support.
