Audio recording feedback

Everything is working fine on my new build, except, when I try to record over an existing track while playing it, using a program called Audacity.

On my old PC I can record track upon track upon track while playing back the already recorded tracks thru my headphones.

On the new comp, I can record a single track fairly well, but when I try to record a new track while playing the original thru the headphones, I get a delayed, distorded, and highly amplified version of the original on the new one, that completely drowns out whatever I am recording. There are also issues with the jacks; when I plug headphones in, it says "you have unplugged a device"...and when I take it out, it says "you have plugged in a device" and asks me to choose which device from a menu.

I've messed around with drivers and configurations, etc...but these problems persist. Is there a way to tell whether the problem is with the case or mobo?

What sound card are you using? How and what are you recording?

Sound card is built into the Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H mobo. I am recording my guitar with a radio shack microphone....it works great with my other PC.

What sounds like is going on is that the recording software or your sound card is set to record what is going through the speakers. You need to switch it so it's just recording the Line In.
