no audio

My Sony Vaio ( pcv-rs710g) has quit playing either sound links or files in either WMP or my iTunes files, however it plays the boot chimes. I tried updating the drivers from Sony and it helped for a short time but now no more sound. The speakers came with the system. I am running XP-home SP-3 my main browser is FireFox3. Hope you can help me thank you owlman1940.
