TV-out on HD 3470 not working properly

Hi,

I'm on my first build (everything works generally). I've got an ATI 3470 video card and I'm trying to get the S-Video TV-out to work. It works, but only sort of. I get the XP cloud background on my TV set but that's it. No program icons, no taskbar, no open programs displayed on the monitor (such as the Catalyst Control Center) are displayed on the TV. Do I have a defective card, or do I need to do something else to fully enable the TV-out? I've poked around the Catalyst Control Center and tried everything I could think of to get it working properly but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

My build: Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4, Intel E8400, 4x1GB Crucial DDR2-1066, Sapphire HD3470, Thermaltake W0144RU 600W. XION XON-101 case, Seagate 250 GB HD SATA2 7200 rpm ST3250410AS, Pioneer IDE DVD burner DVR-115DBK, floppy drive.

Thanks,
Dave

Do you also have your regular monitor attached? If so, the computer could be using your TV as an extension of your desktop. Try dragging a program over to the TV to see.

Hi,

Thanks very much that was it.

Do you know how to set the card up so that it does not use the TV as an extension of the desktop, but instead as a second display of the non-extended desktop?

Do you have to set the TV-out (secondary display) as primary display and then disable the DVI output (now the secondary display)? Can you only use one or the other at a time, and not use both simultaneously?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi,

I'm going to answer my own question. Setting the tv-out to primary and disabling the DVI output does result in the TV-out being the regular computer monitor, i.e. it has the taskbar and the desktop icons and such.

However, there are ugly gray stripes on both sides of the tv screen with the tv-out. I don't like them and I don't feel like RMA-ing the video card and waiting weeks to get another. I have a VGA to RCA scan converter and I'm going to use that instead of the tv-out.

Thanks again very much for the help.

Dave
