Ok. I have a radeon 9800 gfx card in my pc. I was playing FSX yesterday and it was playing really laggy. About a 14fps drop. On landing it froze up and refused to respond, NOTHING worked. I forced a shutdown by holding down the power button. I booted up again and straight away I got a red error: "You have not connected the power extension cable to your Radeon 9800 Pro, please read the manual for proper hardware installation". i have been using this card for about a year and a half. I opened up the tower and found the #4 pin on the molex on the card had burnt out. I have posted these pictures to show what has happened:

what is the model number of your power supply?

I assume it was plugged in...

well yea it was plugged in, the PSU came with the pc, lasted for about three years. The model is:

FSP Group ( never heard of them)
Model: FSP280-60PNA-I (PF)

It occurs to me that a 280W FSP power supply unit would generally be under-powering your system, especially when you're playing graphics-intensive games where power load would be the greatest. The Radeon 9800 series recommends (requires) at least a 300W high-quality PSU. Keep in mind also that the Pentium D processor is known to draw a great amount of power, on top of the 9800, which requires an axillary/extra power connector. That is definitely where I would look first. By chance, does your external hard drive have a power connector, or does it only have a USB connector?

This is an aside, but why are you using a DDR333-speed memory with a Pentium D? I don't think Intel ever made a 533Mhz FSB P-D, so you're likely underclocking your processor.

If I read this right, you installed a Radeon 9800 AGP vid card in a computer with a 280 watt power supply. The MINIMUM recommended power supply for that card was/is 350 watts. Consider yourself lucky that you were using a top brand power supply. FSP Group makes some of the best. Time for a new one. Is this a name brand pc like Dell or HP?

That is a 280w power supply , what is the make of the card? Can you give me the exact model number of the card?

yes, my external hdd has an external mains connector, im pretty sure its a ddr333 but im not 100% sure, yea i installed but why would it run for a year then just give up? Yes it is a name brand, Packard Bell. So i have to get a new PSU correct?

Kram, the PentD 805 is a 2.66GHz, 533fsb cpu. If that's what the op is running, he's ok with the ram.

ok, the Serial number is 180439024359
The part number is 102A0753700 000001 and indeed it is Radeon 9800 PRO 128M
there is also a sticker with and arrow then P33011
and all the black chips on the back have hynix wriittenon them.
I can't remember the make of the card no, i chucked the box ages ago.
I added 512M to the comp about 2 years back.

I'm running DDR-333 Ram with my overclocked Pentium D 820 (920MHz FSB Quad-Pumped) and my processor is not underclocked. I'm pretty sure that the DDR1 motherboards for LGA775 has an unlinked memory controller meaning you can run the FSB independent of ram speeds.

I had the "You have not connected your power extension cable ..." message today, but the solution was rather different. To cut a long story short, the 9800's heatsink had worked loose. I tightened it up, replaced the card ... working graphics....

... and yes, I did check out the other solutions/causes first. The molex on my card was firmly seated, and the pins as bright and shiny as the day they were installed; no sign of burning out at all.

I have a 9800 pro (used to be my old gaming workstation), and on the very rare occasion, I would get that error message glitch. So, I just reseated the molex connector, sometimes reseated the card, unplugged the PSU, then started up again and that usually got rid of it.
