9800 gtx fitment problem

Hi everyone im new to the boards and registered because I have got a problem that hopefully someone can help me with.

Well I just bought a bfg 9800 gtx oc graphics card as well as a 650 watt psu. the psu fits up fine but the fan shroud on the video card hits the 20 or 24 pin motherboard power plug in when I try to push it down. I need another 1/4 inch and it would go all the way down.

Besides that the card will not fit up to the case so I ordered an antec 900 gaming case to fix that problem. But I have no answer to the plug in and fan shroud issue.

Is there a low profile plug of some kind I can get or do I need a new motherboard?

btw I am using the pcie x 16 slot and I only have one of them.

Im not that computer savy...just know the basics...so try and keep it simple LOL

and one more thing...do you guys think this setup will be decent enough with my current processor and ddr2 ram 800 mhz bus etc? what will be my limits?

The link to your PC doesn't work for me.
I don't know of any solution to the problem of the graphics card not clearing the PSU to MOBO connection except a different graphics card or a different motherboard.

man that is a bummer, yeah a new motherboard and maybe case, no thats right you upgraded already, make sure it won't hit the hard drive bays when you get a different board. i would send the Mongoloid monster back. the pfd file said it was 9 inches long but i guess that is wrong... bad luck....

well what motherboard do I need? it is a gateway gx7022e model in case the link doesnt work.

I dont need the best motherboard money can buy but I want something solid. Id say midrange

The height of the graphics card seems to be the issue.....The 9800 gtx is a dual slot card and won't seat completely because of the PSU to MOBO connectors location on the MOBO.
A different graphics card (single slot) would be a simpler solution and much less work.

The pics I find of the Gateway GX7022E show it to be a BTX motherboard.

what do you mean by single slot? dont I have to use the pci express x 16 slot reguardless? sorry for the ignorance. I also have like 3 other standard pci express slots as well that arent the x 16.

But i take it you are talking about the slots on the video card...which slots are these?

what card would you recommend instead?

I got the card at bestbuy and already opened it....will they even take it back now?

Single slot refers to the cooler. The cooler on the 9800GTX+ takes up 2 slots on the case, which is the source of your problem. A single slot card like this Radeon HD 4850 should clear the 24pin connector. Its performance is said to be a bit better than the 9800GTX+ as well.

Put it back in the box the way it came... you might get charged a restocking fee... Where did you buy it?

they have only an overclocked radeon 3870 in stock. it is only 130 bucks though and would be sure to fit.

from some of the peformance scores ive read about it isnt that far behind the 4850.

would my pc even be able to utilize the 4850 to be able to even see a difference between the 3870 and 4850?

should i just go with the 3870?

take it back and get your money back, I think you have 14 days, tell them it doesn't work... you wouldn't be lying... order a atihd4850 online or locally... it is a superior card to the ATI RADEON HD3870 for a little more money. The hd3870 card is very nice as well but the 4850 is the nest card for the money i have seen... Another good, less expensive card is the MSIR4670, this card is amazing for 80.00 but it depends on what games you are playing to an extent.

my cousin is telling me he can find an adaptor to raise the height of the card so I can clear the plug in.

he is callin tiger direct to try and figure something out

you guys dont know of any kind of adaptor that could make this work?

looks like it would work, never seen or used one... I have used the pci 90 degree angle one in desktops.... just might do the trick.

That adapter looks like it would solve your problem but I would be worried about all that weight hanging from the MOBO and how would you attach the graphics card to the PC case? That will set it out away from the locking screw. Personally, I wold be leary of it.

good point! thats right, the riser cards are usually pretty specific to the case...

I thought not important mentioned the large cooler was the reason the 9800GTX wouldn't clear the ATX plug. Going by that, the 4850 with its much smaller heatsink should clear the connector.

I believe ultrazls1 is looking for a way to utilize the 9800GTX. Any single slot card "should" give the clearance that is needed.

After about 3 hours of looking for adaptors and wondering about fitment issues I just said f it and took back the 9800gtx+. Picked up a visiontek ati radeon 4850. It is about half the width of the 98...it should fit just fine. Now I just got to wait for the antec 900 case to get here.

From what I have read the 4850 is a bit better than the original 9800 gtx but the version I had (+ model) is based on the 55nm and can be overclocked quite far and runs cooler...edging out the 4850.

but either way...im not sure ill notice a difference....the pentium D 830 will be the bottleneck newayz

BTX systems from major OEM's are just not designed for accepting such a drastic mod. If you want a system with that strong a video card, you are much better off building a custom yourself, or getting one built for you.

I figured as much. Im going to see how it runs when I get it together and go from there. If im not happy Ill do a build osme time next year.
